About Julia

Julia Duke is a lifetime sewer, learning from her mother and her grandmother. She started out sewing clothing for her dolls, then for herself, and then for others. Wanting to try something new, Julia started making quilts.

“Quilt-making lets me combine fabrics in a large format, and I get to use pieces of fabric that I’ve been collecting for years …..and years. I’ve always liked making art, but haven’t felt confident in a medium until making art with fabrics”.

The top stitching on these quilts is done with a mid-arm machine, which allows Julia to topstitch on pieces up to queen-sized quilts. The process is “free-motion”, or freehand, meaning that there are no machine presets or stencils to create the topstitching patterns.

Julia grew up in Connecticut, has a Biology degree from Bard College and Nursing degrees from Pace University. She studied art in college, but knew that nursing would be her career. She has lived in Vermont for over 25 years, pursuing her lifelong passions for nursing and textiles.

“Quilting is meditative and also fulfills that restless urge to create. And there is something really satisfying about putting different fabrics together. Maybe that’s just a me thing.”
